The Main North line starts from Sydney and extends north to the Queensland border, at the town of Wallangarra.

It once was the main line to Queensland, with a break-of-gauge at the border. Now however, the North Coast Line provides a standard gauge line to Brisbane, and the Main North is closed just beyond Armidale.

The section from Sydney to Maitland forms part of the main northern trunk line, and carries all sorts of freight and passenger trains. From Maitland to Armidale, freight dominates, especially coal in rich Hunter Valley coal fields. Nevertheless, passenger trains do run all the way to Armidale.

The town of Werris Creek is a major rail location, where the north-west lines branch off.
