The Unanderra-Moss Vale line provides an alternate route for trains to reach the major industrial city of Wollongong. It sees much freight traffic to and from Wollongong and Port Kembla, and also trains which want to avoid the congested Main South into Sydney.
In addition, 3801 Ltd runs steam trains every weekend between the end points of this line, using their famous locomotive 3801.
